Shortcut Tools
Tools for repairing, modifying and checking shortcuts (links) in Windows 7. (Tools for Windows XP can be found here.)
Installation: No installation necessary. Just copy the VBS-files (VBScript source codes) onto your computer or your USB stick (pen drive) or any other location.
Usage:
To start a tool, double click on the VBS-file. Your system should know that it has to start the VBScript interpreter in order to execute the tool.
The tools:
-
shortcutCopyWin7.vbs: a tool for (1.) replacing shortcuts (links) by their targets or (2.) copying the targets into the folder(s) containing the shortcuts.
Usage:
- Select the folder containing the LNK-files to be processed. (Do not select a system folder.)
- Unselect/select the 'non deleting' option.
- Unselect/select the 'use shortcut names' option.
- Unselect/select the 'recursive' option.
In the default mode, all LNK-files in the selected folder are processed: for each LNK-file, the target is copied into the folder containing the LNK-file and the LNK-file is deleted.
With the 'non deleting' option, the program does not delete the LNK-files after copying their targets.
With the 'use shortcut names' option, each copied target gets the name and the attributes of its shortcut.
With the 'recursive' option, the program also processes recursively all subfolders of the selected folder.
Version: 16.11.2010
-
shortcutCheckWin7.vbs: a tool for checking shortcuts (links).
Usage:
- Select the folder containing the LNK-files to be processed. (Do not select a system folder.)
- Unselect/select the 'recursive' option.
In the default mode, all LNK-files in the selected folder are processed: for each LNK-file, the existence of the target and the existence of the working directory are checked.
With the 'recursive' option, the program also processes recursively all subfolders of the selected folder.
Version: 16.11.2010
-
shortcutCreateListWin7.vbs: a tool for creating a list (in ASCII format) of the targets of shortcuts (links).
Usage:
- Select the folder containing the LNK-files to be processed. (Do not select a system folder.)
- Unselect/select the 'names only' option.
- Unselect/select the 'with arguments' option
- Unselect/select the 'recursive' option.
In the default mode, all LNK-files in the selected folder are processed: for each LNK-file, the target path is written into the file 'shortcutList.txt' (in the selected folder).
With the 'names only' option, the program writes only the names of the targets instead of the paths.
With the 'with arguments' option, the program also writes the arguments.
With the 'recursive' option, the program also processes recursively all subfolders of the selected folder.
Version: 17.9.2015
-
shortcutRepairWin7.vbs: a tool for repairing shortcuts (links) whose targets have been moved or copied to a new location. For all shortcuts to be repaired, this new location must be one and the same folder.
Usage:
- Select the folder containing the LNK-files to be processed. (Do not select a system folder.)
- Select the folder containing the targets of the LNK-files. (Do not select a system folder.)
- Unselect/select the 'all LNK-files' option.
- Unselect/select the 'recursive' option.
In the default mode, all LNK-files in the first selected folder are processed: if the target of an LNK-file does not exist, then the second selected folder is considered, and if there exists a file or folder with the same name as the target of the LNK-file, then this file or folder becomes the new target of the LNK-file (and the folder of the new target becomes the new working directory of the LNK-file if this makes sense).
With the 'all LNK-files' option, the program tries to change the targets of all LNK-files (that is, even of those LNK-files whose current targets exist).
With the 'recursive' option, the program also processes recursively all subfolders of the first selected folder.
Version: 16.11.2010
-
shortcutRepair2Win7.vbs: a tool for repairing shortcuts (links) whose targets are located in a subtree that has been moved or copied to a new location.
Usage:
- Select the folder containing the LNK-files to be processed. (Do not select a system folder.)
- Enter the name of an arbitrary LNK-file from the selected folder or the (relative or absolute) path of an arbitrary LNK-file from any location. (Do not enter the name or the path of a system file.)
- Select the folder containing the target of the specified LNK-file.
- Unselect/select the 'all LNK-files' option.
- Unselect/select the 'recursive' option.
In the default mode, the program first determines a string operation (exchanging a substring of minimum possible length at the beginning of the path) that transforms the target path of the specified LNK-file into the selected new target path. Then all LNK-files in the first selected folder are processed: if the target of an LNK-file does not exist, then the exchange operation is executed on the target path, and if the resulting target exists, then it becomes the new target of the LNK-file (and the folder of the new target becomes the new working directory of the LNK-file if this makes sense).
With the 'all LNK-files' option, the program tries to change the targets of all LNK-files (that is, even of those LNK-files whose current targets exist).
With the 'recursive' option, the program also processes recursively all subfolders of the first selected folder.
Version: 1.1.2012
-
shortcutRepairWorkDirWin7.vbs: a tool for (1.) repairing shortcuts (links) whose working directories are not valid any more or (2.) changing the working directories of shortcuts.
Usage:
- Select the folder containing the LNK-files to be processed. (Do not select a system folder.)
- Select the folder that shall become the new working directory. (Do not select a system folder.)
- Unselect/select the 'all LNK-files' option.
- Unselect/select the 'recursive' option.
In the default mode, all LNK-files in the first selected folder are processed: if the working directory of an LNK-file does not exist and is not the empty string, then the second selected folder becomes the new working directory of the LNK-file.
With the 'all LNK-files' option, the program tries to change the targets of all LNK-files whose working directories are not the empty string (that is, even of those LNK-files whose current working directories exist).
With the 'recursive' option, the program also processes recursively all subfolders of the first selected folder.
